A first draft is a strange and vulnerable thing. It contains half-formed ideas you haven't said out loud yet. Characters who embarrass you a little. Sentences you'd never show anyone. It is, in an almost literal sense, the inside of your head.
And then you see how novels and stories, ideas and all of humanity have been fed into algorithms. And it at best makes me uncomfortable. Don't misunderstand me. It is remarkable what these models can do, and I believe, used responsibly, there is real benefit to be had for writers like myself and like you.
But, and I cannot stress this strongly enough, creativity is not something to be harvested. My words, my work, my opinions, the arguments in my head that I put down, labour over, that I craft and curate and present as fragments of our shared humanity — this is not food for a machine. It is not a thing to be stolen so that others can skip the steps that make art art.
So, when I first started building Writing Desk I made a decision. Your words are yours. Not in a terms and conditions kind of way, in every way. And here's how.
Authorship
Writing Desk will never generate prose on your behalf. Not a line. Not a sentence. Not a suggested paragraph you can accept with one click. This is our core principle.
Writing is hard and messy and beautiful. And with Writing Desk it will remain that way. Everything on the page comes from you. That means the work is yours legally, creatively, and in every way that matters when someone eventually reads it. AI in Writing Desk is a thinking tool. It asks questions, offers perspective, challenges your logic. It never puts words in your mouth.
Creative Identity
Writing Desk never uses your writing to train AI models. Not ours, not anyone else's. Our AI features work transiently — your manuscript goes in, a response comes back, nothing is retained. What you write exists for one person: you. Until you decide otherwise.

Security
Writing Desk is a native Mac app. Your manuscript lives as a file on your machine — not on our servers, not in our database, not dependent on our company staying solvent or maintaining enterprise-grade security. That's a deliberate choice, not a limitation.
The one place your manuscript travels is if you choose to use our print-ready export tool. Generating a professionally typeset PDF requires brief server-side processing — that's just the nature of the task. When it's done, we ask whether you'd like us to keep a copy for future use, or delete it immediately. That choice is yours, not ours.
Security through simplicity. Control where it matters.
Your Files, Your Rules
You can still sync to the cloud, access from multiple devices, but you do it using the services you already trust, on terms you've already agreed to. Writing Desk works seamlessly with whichever cloud platform you already use. We just don't need to be in the middle of it.
