Dwarven naming conventions
Dwarven names in fantasy fiction cluster around hard consonants, short punchy vowels, and sounds that suggest stone, iron, and forge-work. The Norse and Old Germanic naming traditions are the primary influence: think Thorin, Gimli, Balin, Dwalin — names that feel ancient, earned, and unsentimental.
Dwarven cultures in most fantasy settings are clan-based and ancestral in orientation. Last names or clan names often reference a craft, a place, an ancestor, or an achievement: Ironvein, Goldmantle, Hammerfall, Oathbreaker. The clan name carries as much or more weight than the given name.
Masculine and feminine dwarven names
Unlike elvish naming conventions, dwarven names in fantasy tend to maintain clearer gender distinctions — masculine names are typically harder and shorter, while feminine names often incorporate softer endings. Tolkien's dwarves were almost entirely male in his texts, but contemporary fantasy has substantially expanded the representation of dwarven women, with their own naming traditions developing accordingly.
The female dwarven names in this generator draw on Old Norse feminine naming patterns — names ending in -a, -dis, -rid, -hild — which feel culturally coherent with the masculine tradition.
