Naming a vampire character
Vampire names carry specific cultural expectations built up across two centuries of fiction. The dominant traditions are Eastern European (Slavic, Romanian, Hungarian) and Western European aristocratic — names that suggest old money, old power, and a long life spent accumulating both.
The most effective vampire names often have a formal register — full names, not nicknames. A vampire who goes by 'Aleksei Voronov' signals something different from one who goes by 'Alex'. The formality is part of the characterisation: these are beings who have had centuries to develop an attachment to ceremony and the trappings of a lost era.
Subverting vampire naming conventions
If your vampire fiction is doing something fresh — contemporary settings, non-European cultural backgrounds, vampires who've deliberately shed their aristocratic identity — the naming conventions become useful to subvert. A vampire with a completely ordinary contemporary name signals immediately that this isn't the classic template. That contrast is a characterisation choice worth making deliberately.
