Thriller fiction: the craft of sustained tension

Thriller fiction is built on a simple promise: something terrible is coming, and the reader will feel it approaching. Sustaining that feeling across a whole novel is a craft challenge that requires careful control of information, pacing, and character investment.

The most common mistake in thriller writing is confusing busy with tense. Events happening isn't the same as tension. Tension is the gap between what the reader knows or fears and what the protagonist knows or can do — and that gap has to be maintained, even in action sequences.

Psychological vs action thriller

Psychological thrillers work through paranoia, restricted perception, and the unreliability of the protagonist's understanding of their situation. The threat is often close — a colleague, a partner, a neighbour — and the story is about the protagonist's slow, dawning realisation. Information is the primary currency.

Action thrillers work through external, physical threat with a higher pace and more kinetic energy. The stakes are usually clear and large. The craft challenge is maintaining emotional investment through action sequences that could easily become mechanical.
