Crime fiction across the tonal spectrum

Crime fiction is one of the most commercially successful and formally diverse genres in fiction. At one end, cosy mysteries offer warmth, community, and puzzles that resolve cleanly. At the other, noir presents a world where nothing resolves cleanly and the detective is as compromised as the criminals they pursue.

The craft requirements shift substantially across this spectrum. Cosy mysteries prioritise the puzzle and the community; hardboiled fiction prioritises voice and moral complexity; noir prioritises atmosphere and the corruption of institutions.

The role of the setting in crime fiction

Crime fiction is unusually dependent on setting — the locked room, the isolated village, the rain-soaked city — in ways that other genres aren't. The setting creates the constraint, and constraint is what makes a mystery solvable. A murder on an island with seven suspects is a fundamentally different creative problem from a murder in a city with a million potential suspects.

Use the setting prompts here as structural starting points. The location isn't just atmosphere — it defines the investigation's scope and the list of plausible suspects.
