Writing historical fiction
Historical fiction makes a double demand on the writer: you have to do the research and then almost hide it. The period detail should feel lived-in and natural rather than displayed. Readers can feel the difference between a writer who's done the research and one who's pasted it in.
The deeper challenge is psychological authenticity. Historical people were not simpler than modern people — they had inner lives of equivalent complexity, just shaped by entirely different assumptions, beliefs, and material conditions. Giving your historical characters that complexity, while keeping them credibly of their time, is the central craft problem.
Choosing a historical period
Every historical period has its own body of specialist knowledge required to write it well, and its own set of reader expectations. Ancient history requires one kind of research; the First World War requires another. The most important thing is to choose a period you're genuinely interested in — the research load is substantial enough that enthusiasm has to carry it.
The prompts here span a wide range of periods. Use them as entry points into whichever era calls to you, and let the historical research expand from there.
