Writing young adult fiction

Young adult fiction is defined not by content but by emotional perspective. YA protagonists are in the process of becoming — forming identity, understanding their relationship to family and community, experiencing love and loss for the first time at full emotional intensity. The power of YA comes from taking these experiences seriously, not from protecting the reader from them.

The craft of YA is largely about interiority and emotional authenticity. The protagonist's inner experience has to be rendered with precision and honesty — not explained or simplified. Readers in the YA age range are acutely sensitive to being talked down to.

What makes a good YA story

The best YA fiction gives its protagonist genuine agency — they make choices that have real consequences, and those consequences can't be reversed by an adult stepping in. The teenage experience of having real stakes and limited power is what makes YA fiction emotionally resonant for readers of any age.

YA spans enormous genre diversity: fantasy, sci-fi, contemporary, historical, romance, mystery, horror. What unifies them is the protagonist's position — in the process of becoming, navigating a world they didn't choose and don't yet fully understand.
