Writing contemporary literary fiction
Contemporary fiction is sometimes called the most difficult genre to write, because it has no ready-made external stakes. Fantasy has quests. Crime has murders. Contemporary literary fiction has people living their lives — and the writer has to make that feel urgent, significant, and worth a reader's time.
The craft of contemporary fiction is largely about precision of observation and rendering. The story lives in the gap between what characters say and what they mean, between what's happening externally and what it costs internally. Getting that gap right, on every page, is the work.
The ordinary as subject matter
The most celebrated contemporary fiction is often about things that don't sound interesting as plot summaries: a family clearing out a house, a woman deciding whether to leave a job, two people in a long marriage. These prompts are the subject matter of the literary short story and the domestic novel.
What makes them work is that the external situation is a container for a much larger interior story — about identity, about time, about what we owe each other. The external event gives the writer something to work with; the interior story is what the reader takes away.
